2017 Triple Crown:143rd Kentucky DerbyMay 02, 2015 by Marc Jerbs

On Saturday, the Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky will host the 1st Triple Crown race of 2017, the 143rd Kentucky Derby. The Grade I stakes race is for three year old thoroughbreds and will cover a total race distance of 1 ¼ miles of the dirt-surfaced Churchill Downs.

This is the penultimate race that will end the two-week long Kentucky Derby Festival. The total purse of the race is set at $2 million with the winner taking home $1.425 million and a chance to end up as a Triple Crown winner.

The complete race participants of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled to be released on Wednesday. Classic Empire is among the horses that rings a tune to the bettors. It has 5 wins in seven career races, including victories in the Arkansas Derby and Breeder's Cup Juvenile race.

Another race horse to consider is Always Dreaming. It has won its past two races, including the Florida Derby last April 1. The point's leader in the qualification races for the Kentucky Derby, Girvin automatically earns a spot for Saturday. However, most of his recent wins have come in Grade II stakes race.

The sportsbook handicappers have installed Classic Empire as the slight favorite to win the 143rd Kentucky Derby. Always Dreaming has a shot to derail Classic Empire's dream of winning this Saturday's 1st Triple Crown race.
