May 29, 2013 by Marc Jerbs

On Wednesday, the 2013 French Open started last May 26 at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris, France. This is the second Grand Slam event on the ATP/WTA Tour. The tournament will run until June 9 and will feature the final match of the day, the men's single championship.

Seven-time men's single champion Rafael Nadal and 2012 women's single champion Maria Sharapova will play to defend their titles against world class tennis players.

Rafael Nadal suffered a major scare in his 1st round match against Daniel Brands. He lost the first set 6-4 and was pushed into a tiebreak in the 2nd set but eventually disposed the German 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3. He will next face Slovakian Martin Klizan in the second round.

Second seed and defending women's champion Maria Sharapova had an easier time as she dispatched Su-Wei Hseih in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. She will next face Eugenie Bouchard in the second round.

The sportsbook handicappers have installed Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams as the favorites to win the French Open. Their main competitors for the title would be Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova.
