ATP/WTA Tour: 2012 US Open
August 29, 2012 by Marc Jerbs

Last Monday, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center located at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, NY opened its doors for the 2012 US Open. The US Open is the last major tournament for both the ATP and WTA. The tournament will end on September 9, the same date of the Men's single final.

The top seeds from the men's and women's draw have easily advanced to the second round by easily winning their first round matches. In the men's bracket, top seed Roger Federer will face Germany's Bjorn Phau in the second round, Olympic champion and third seed Andy Murray will meet Crotia's Ivan Dodig, defending champion and second seed Novak Djokovic will go up against Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva.

In the women's singles event, the top women tennis players also have an easy time in dispatching their respective 1st round opponents. Top seed Victoria Azarenka will meet Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens in the second round.

Other high-profile matches in the second round are: third seed Maria Sharapova against Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino, second seed Agnieszka Radwanska against Carla Suarez Navarro and Olympic champion Serena Williams against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

The sportsbook handicappers have installed Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams as the favorites to win the 2012 US Open title in their respective events. Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska could be the stumbling blocks that could derail the title bid of Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.
