Greyhound Racing News: Thursday Night's Group 1 Winter Cup
June 28, 2016 by Marc Jerbs

Since a disappointing showing as favourite in the heats of the Golden Easter Egg in March, Zambora Brockie has taken all before him, with seven wins and a third from his next eight starts, inclusive of two Group 2 Country Cups.

With the fields drawn for the Group 1 Winter Cup this Thursday, his winning ways look to continue after being opened favourite to win his heat and the final. This incredible run of form has not gone unnoticed by the punters either, with Azzorpardi trained star being backed in to favouritism with both the Group 1 Melbourne Cup ($13 into $8) and the "Next Million Dollar Dog" market ($151 into $17).

In his last ten weeks of racing, the only blemish on his record is a third from an awkward draw in a heat of the Group 1 Harrison Dawson at Sandown Park, still in a respectable 29.43. Outside of this, the remaining seven starts have resulted in seven wins, six of which were in the quickest time of the night, and two of those consisted of the aforementioned Country Cup success at Warrnambool (won in 24.92 from box 6) and Horsham (26.72 from box 8).

Interestingly, the one win where he failed to record the best time of the night was when the son of Nitro Burst (x Flying Liddy) stopped the clock at 29.67 (just shy of the 29.66 set by Thirty Talks) at his first look at Albion Park earlier this month. This is the very track where he will step out $1.30 favourite on Thursday night from box 2 in the second heat of the Group 1 Winter Cup and $3 favourite to win the final.

Azzopardi is also bringing with him Master Jackpot (heat 3, box 2, $2.30), who is going for his third straight win after a pair of impressive metro wins. While Darren Pattinson is also making the trip North with Blazin' Bomber (heat 1, box 6, $2.60), who has made seven separate Group finals and ran on in impressive style at his first run at the track last Thursday night.

Local hopes appear to rest with Outside Pass (heat 3, box 7, $1.85), trained by Tony Apap, and Thirty Talks (heat 4, box 6, $1.65) who is looking to add to his already impressive of 13 wins from just 17 career starts, which have generated almost $140,000 in prize money.

Should Zambora Brockie be successful in the Winter Cup, he will take his career earnings above $300,000, with the Geelong ($47,000 to the winner), Ballarat ($77,000), and Melbourne ($420,000) Cups in his sights in the coming months.
