Royal Randwick Racecourse History

Originally opened in 1833, Royal Randwick Racecourse has a rich history in Australian Racing circles.

It began with a few surface problems due to the sandy track and was subsequently closed in 1840.

But in 1860, the formation of the Australian Jockey Club saw the track re-open for Racing.

Some 151 years later, the Club merged with the Sydney Turf Club to create the Australian Turf Club.

1992 is a key date in this track's history as Queen Elizabeth II opened the Paddock Stand and allowed the track to be named "Royal" Randwick.

In its time, the track has undergone many changes of its facilities to maintain the high standards.

The year of 2013 saw the track undergo a $150 million upgrade of the grandstand. In 2017, The Everest was formed and instantly became the richest race on offer in Australia.
