May 14, 2014 by Marc Jerbs

On Thursday, the PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona, Spain will host the 4-day golf tournament, 89th Open de España. This is the third time that the PGA Catalunya Resort will host the tournament.

Max Faulner was the last golfer who claimed back-to-back titles from 1952-53 when it was called the Spanish Open. No other golfer has successfully defended the championship when it was included in the European Tour in 1972.

Defending champion Raphael Jacquelin will try to become the first player to defend his Open de España title. Last year, he had to go through a nine-hole playoff before beating Filipe Aguilar and Max Kieffer.

The sportsbook handicappers have installed Sergio Garcia as the favorite to win the Open de España. Francesco Molinari, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thomas Bjorn are among his strongest challengers.
